Adult ADHD Medication
You may need medication if changes in the environment do not allow you to be successful in school or at work. These drugs can be short-acting or long-acting, and include the methylphenidate (such as Ritalin) and amphetamines salts.
In the UK in the United Kingdom, stimulants are among the most frequently prescribed ADHD medication. They are the first choice until you have a different health issue that requires a different treatment.
Stimulants
Stimulants improve the activity of brain regions which control behavior and attention. They increase concentration, focus the mind and reduce the tendency to be impulsive. They can be legally prescribed as ADHD medication. However, they are often used recreationally as illegal substances like copyright and methamphetamines to boost energy levels and feelings of well-being.
The most widely used stimulant for ADHD is methylphenidate. You may have heard of by the brand name Ritalin. It boosts activity in the brain regions that regulate attention and behavior which improves concentration and decreases hyperactive and impulsive behavior. It can be taken in the form of immediate-release tablets taken every 2 or 3 times per day or modified-release capsules that release the medication throughout the day.
Lisdexamfetamine stimulates certain regions of the brain, which enhances concentration and helps to focus the mind. It also helps to reduce impulsive behavior. If methylphenidate fails to work it is usually prescribed to teenagers, adults and children over five years old. Lisdexamfetamine tablets are typically taken in two or three doses per day. Atomoxetine differs from the other medications listed above and is offered to adults, teens and children (aged 5plus) who are not able to take lisdexamfetamine or methylphenidate due to adverse effects or other causes. It is a selective Noradrenaline Reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). It increases the amount noradrenaline, which transmits brain signals and improves the concentration and control of impulses. It is taken in the form of a tablet or oral solution once a day.
A large number of randomized controlled trials and observational studies have looked at the advantages and disadvantages of drug treatment for adult adhd. These studies have compared different treatments to placebos or other drugs, but not all included head-tohead studies. This study combines results from those studies employing a method known as network meta-analysis. This is the biggest analysis of ADHD to date and reinforces NICE's guidelines for prescribing medications for adults with ADHD.
The findings indicate that a significant proportion of people with ADHD can benefit from medication. It is essential to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits prior to taking any medication. Patients should talk to a physician about this and, where appropriate you can take steps to manage the symptoms of the disorder with other treatments, such as treatment and lifestyle changes. It is also crucial to recognize any medical condition that could cause or exacerbate symptoms similar to ADHD, like sleep apnea and narcolepsy, thyroid disorders, depression, and lead poisoning. A thorough medical history and a thorough examination are crucial in assessing for possible causes for the symptoms. Patients with an extensive history of drinking or substance abuse must be treated with extreme care. A referral to a specialist could be required. Patients who have a history of developmental disorders or other serious mental health issues need to be assessed more thoroughly and read more referred for special evaluations and tests as necessary. This could include a thorough family history, since genetic factors have been known to play a part in ADHD.
